Job Description

Location: Fort Worth, TX | Full-Time | On-Site

Ferris Mfg. Corp., a Fort Worth-based medical device manufacturer and creator of PolyMem Advanced Wound Care Dressings, is seeking a Material Engineer/Scientist to support the Product Development team as well as collaborate with the Manufacturing, Regulatory, Marketing and Sales departments.

You will be responsible for finding, developing, and qualifying materials for the new and existing Ferris products.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and optimize materials for medical devices, ensuring compliance with regulatory and performance targets.
  • Find and qualify alternative sources and alternate materials 1) to assure consistent supply and 2) to save on costs (if possible)
  • Investigate and understand foam (especially polyurethane foam) production and processing from a technical perspective.
  • Guide material selection, characterization, and processing techniques.
  • Support product development from concept through commercialization, including prototyping, testing, and validation.
  • Support material compliance, sourcing, and improvements across product lifecycle.
  • Investigate and resolve material-related issues in design, manufacturing, and field operations.
  • Prepare key material related documentation, such as, specifications, test methods, protocols, and reports.
  • Contribute to risk management, design control, audits, and regulatory submissions.
  • Stay current with emerging materials technologies and industry trends relevant to medical devices.
  • Draft, edit, and critique policies, procedures, work instructions, specifications, reports, and records.

Must Have Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Materials Science / Engineering, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, or other relevant field.
  • Experience preferred in materials engineering, ideally in foam, plastic, silicone, web, adhesive, chemical, or medical device industries.
  • Strong understanding of polymers, plastics, and composites used in medical applications; familiarity with metals and ceramics is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of material science fundamentals (morphology, surface chemistry, etc.) for troubleshooting or field issues.
  • Experience with material characterization and imaging techniques (e.g., SEM, ICP, GFAA, FTIR, mechanical testing, etc.) and laboratories that provide such services.
  • Familiarity with FDA and ISO regulations for medical devices, especially ISO10993 is beneficial.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Working both independently and as part of a team are essential.
  • Knowledge of biocompatibility and sterilization processes is beneficial.
  • Experience with chemical and materials modeling software/techniques and CAD, is beneficial.
